Gulf Sunset - 1 week b/4 Katrina

This is the beautiful sun setting over the Gulf taken on the Island Star boat (King Fisher Cruise Lines) near Cape Coral, FL. We were there just one week before Hurricane Katrina. Boy did we get lucky!

It saddens me to think that just two weeks later, that poor boat may not even exist anymore. So for all of you, who like me (before vacation), wonder why people continue to live in Hurrican Alley areas, here is why.

Can you imagine seeing this every evening before you go to bed? It was breathtaking. I only wish the boat would have stayed still long enough, or I had a better camera, LOL, so that the pictures wouldn't have gotten out of focus.

(In case you are wondering, the photo above was taken using a Nikon Coolpix 995 digital camera.)

Hurricane Katrina

Well, we just missed this hurricane. Mom and I were at Ft Myers and Ft Lauderdale just the week prior. My dear best friend's father is still an unknown. He was in Slidell, that got hit very hard, and he apparently was too stubborn to leave! I am quite concerned as I don't think DBF is prepared for the idea of not having a father anymore.

The gas lines were already growing here in ATL. Shocking how people get so paranoid. The gas prices have already been going up extremely high, for no good reason. True we will be losing some access to gas temporarily, but you can't tell me in this day and age of transport and computers that the major gas companies haven't already figured out how to pump more, and route around, the gulf. They will just milk us for all that we are worth. Here's a thought, tell the government to give us a break and stop charging taxes on the gas! But, why would Bush and Cheney want to actually decrease the cost of gas, and decrease their deep pockets. Hmm..

My heart does go out to all of those people affected. I cannot imagine going more than a day, let a lone a month, without electricity. My gosh, no internet? I would die. I also feel so sorry for their losses, not just monetary, but emotional. To have photos and love letters and such all destroyed. Nothing can replace those.

But, what is really on my mind these last few days is where is the out pouring of support from other nations?! We seem to be either the first, or among the first, to help other countries in times of major disasters, even if we can't afford it. But, how often, other than 911, do any other nations come to our rescue? Makes you think eh?

Meanwhile, I encourage all Americans to donate monies. The losses will be great, and these folks are going to need help in a great way. Give to the Red Cross, or your favorite humanitarian effort, but give. Skip those big mugs of Starbucks for a month and give the money to help the folks devastated by this hurricane. Remember, but for the sake of god (or fate), there go ye.
