Outsourcing America

Wide Angle . 1-800-INDIA | PBS

Damn, I can't find any recent articles, and damn, why don't people DATE their web articles, but this is from Sept 05. I have gotten first hand affects of outsourcing recently. My company outsourced labor to help with a transition of support roles from one country to ours. Now, they continue to outsource by having some of the East Indian natives here on work visas, and some still in Pune, India, telecommuting. Now, I have nothing against these guys, they are all very nice and respectful. But, it is hard for me to be appreciative of them when I feel that they are taking jobs away from other Americans.

But then, wait a minute, are they? It seems that there may be more to the picture than just the image before us. With the growing trend of devaluing science and math in schools, or at least, our status of being #26th in the world for math/science grades, maybe we just don't have enough trained individuals to do these IT jobs. But, that is at the programmer level.

Support roles, such as the Tech support offered up by Dell and other PC manus, there is no reason those need to be outsourced. Why are they then? For profit, pure and simple. These CEOs just don't seem to know how to live off of the millions/billions they have already, but they need to get more and more. And, for those who have spent a great deal of time and energy pursuing an IT degree, only to find that there is no job for them, it isn't a good thing. At one time, it was very easy to get an entry level position programming. Companies accepted that you would be green, and there would be some ramp up time. Well, now companies still accept that position. However, that entry-level position no longer goes to an American citizen, instead it is outsourced to India.

What does it mean for the mighty America when we have outsourced so much of our jobs that we are no longer self sufficient? What will happen to us when other countries start enacting trade restrictions against us because they don't agree with our domestic policies. Who will we turn to to feed our nation when this happens? Is America a 3rd world nation in the waiting? Think about it.
