The Proof is in the Pudding

USNews.com: America's Best Colleges 2006: National Universities: Top Schools

I am often criticized down here in the South for being a "damn yankee." Mostly because I reiterate how amazed I am at the apparent rampant lack of knowledge/education I find here in the south. Granted, there are exceptions to everything, and of course, those I work with are among the more intelligent (I won't mention what proportion of those are northerners, lol.)

But, I thought I would do a little research. As I expected, the vast majority of top universities are in the Northern states. About 20% of the top 100 are in southern states. (I don't include CA since they don't consider themselves "southerners" and there are great number of them in NC, so I include them as "the south" loosely.)

Now, I am not saying everyone down here is ignorant. But when you look at the general population, what else do these statistics show. Trust me, I hear all kinds of excuses, such as "those books were banned when we were in school," or "it is all because of you Yankees coming down here," and so on. But, why is there not a better distribution of top schools in the South? And among those universities in the south, a great number of them are Private universities. What is up with Public education here? I mean, come on, if you live in GA you get to go to college for free. Hmmm, maybe there is something to that...

While I am at it, what fool at USNews ranked GA Tech above Ohio State!

And don't worry Southerners, this Damn Yankee is moving back to Ohio by 2008. I like to drive in cities where people actually know how to drive and be courteous. (Again, there is always an exception, don't take offense, I am just making generalizations based on MY experiences.)
